Zelda Style RPG Games Ranked

What separates this group from the RPG group is that these games have a lot of action. You do most of the fighting yourself rather than having a battle engine. Like the regular RPGs the NES really excels in this category.  This category is far from complete but all the games listed are enjoyable.

Agent K's Rankings

  1. Legend of Zelda - Possibly the greatest game on the NES. It was the first and best of its kind.
  2. Zelda II - Talk about a great series, wow!
  3. Crystalis - Very fun, with some minor drawbacks.
  4. Magic of Scheherazade - Pretty darn cool. Mixes both hands on fighting and a battle engine.
  5. Spiritual Warfare - Even Wisdom Tree adds a great RPG game. Talk about surprise, I guess miracles do happen. Seriously this is a very good game.
  6. StarTropics – You kill people with a yo-yo which is nice but the controls are only decent.
  7. Willow – I don’t love it.
  8. Battle of Olympus – I sure like the Greco-Roman Gods theme!
  9. Castlevania II – Castlevania broke away from its traditional mold for this game and then went back after.  That said this is a fun game.
  10. Hydlide – Not as bad as some claim but certainly last on this illustrious list.

       Unranked and Unplayed:

  • Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics 2
  • Magician

Agent J's Rankings

  1. Legend of Zelda – One of the landmark games on the NES.  Obviously this one tops the list.
  2. Zelda II – It’s a lot different from the original but only slightly worse.
  3. Spiritual Warfare – What can I say?  This game shocked me.  It is genuinely fun and an absolute clone of The Legend of Zelda.
  4. Crystalis – Very good game, a more linear version of The Legend of Zelda.
  5. Faxanadu – A combination of the gothic style of Castlevania and the adventure aspect of Zelda II.  Ugly graphics but fun game.
  6. Willow – Much better than the movie.  In fact if the movie were this good, it’d be considered a classic.
  7. Magic of Scheherazade – Interesting but ultimately a little disappointing due to the repetitiveness of it.
  8. StarTropics – Nintendo developed this one so I expected a lot.  Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the final results.
  9. Hydlide – These are the kind of games that should be getting remade.  One of the first ever RPG/Adventure titles (from 1984) that has some interesting ideas mixed with some serious playability problems.
