Wrestling Games Ranked

The wrestling situation on the NES is interesting.  Pro Wrestling is straight up great and was released super early into the NES’s run.  Since that impressive beginning companies have added real wrestlers, steel cages, tournaments, crappy toys, finishing moves, and other cool features.  However, almost every time the creators neglected to include grappling, the most important aspect of wrestling.  Without grappling the games are often reduced to displays of punching and kicking.  With their obvious love of kick boxing, I am stunned there is no NES version of Van Damme’s classic, Bloodsport.  There’s a rumor that both WWF games that we haven’t played include grappling and individual moves, and WCW Wrestling is actually fun.  This has sent Agent J back to the caves in search of these games and fire.

Agent J and K's Rankings

  1. Pro Wrestling - The original was never even contested
  2. WWF Wrestlemania Steel Cage Challenge – Big improvement from WWF Wrestlemania.  It has grappling and a cage!!
  3. Tecmo World Wrestling - Looks fun but haven't gotten too interested in it.
  4. M.U.S.C.L.E. – Based on the little lame toys.  Features 8 characters each with one unique move.
  5. Tag Team Wrestling - Has a little potential but so far it's pretty weak.
  6. WWF Wrestlemania - A disgrace to the legendary Hulkster. No grappling?!! Basically just punching and kicking.

Unranked and Unplayed:

  • WWF Wrestlemania Challenge
  • WCW Wrestling
  • WWF King of the Ring
