The Little Mermaid

Grade: B-

Easy but somewhat fun is what springs to mind. The Little Mermaid for those of you who don't have children, are not children, or don't own a T.V. is a Disney movie made around 1850 or so. The game is based on the movie and I can't say how true to the film it is because well I've never actually seen the movie. I'm going to bet that this game was geared to the movie's audience, children. For a kid's game it is great. Decent graphics, quick paced, solid controls and pretty fun. However the game is very short and easy. Even the end guys are really easy. The only tough part is the boss at the end of level 2 and I wouldn't exactly call him tough. All in all I would recommend this for a quick game to beat.

Positives:

Decent graphics, solid controls and for those of you with a mermaid fetish, it's got a mermaid in it!!

Glaring Negatives:

It's short and sweet. It's definitely made for the tykes.

Graphics and Sound: Good

The graphics are pretty good and the cut-scenes look pretty cool. Also the mermaid looks pretty hilarious when she's flopping around on dry land.

Gameplay and Controls: Great

The controls are excellent, very tight and solid. However there aren't many controls, just move around and shoot. The only annoying thing is without a manual the barrels are confusing. You can only break them after you've powered up.

Features: A little

There are no features for actually playing the game. However, there are power-ups. Power-ups for a mermaid you might ask. Oh heck yeah. You can get a more powerful tail or an enhancement that gives it more range. Didn't expect that did you?

Fun?: Some

This is a cute game that goes by quickly. It's fun to a degree. If you enjoy thinking about how awesome you are as you punk a kid's game (as I do) then it is fun the first time.

Challenge: Very little

Actually if you are very young the challenge is high. However, I haven't seen many 4 year olds going old school with their NES. If you're a gamer it's as easy as eating French silk pie before your brother can get a piece.

Replay: Nearly none

If you love Disney and or mermaids this game may hold infinite replay for you. If not I'd call it a one time througher.

2 Player: None

No two player mode and certainly not fun to watch. Although on the plus side as an observer the game will be over quick.

Online Manual?: Yes

Every manual is available at www.nesarchives.com

Bottom Line: Sure why not

It is fun and easy to beat. Will you drag it out every couple of weeks to relive the memories, umm no probably not.

2nd Opinion – Agent J: B-

Doesn’t capture the movie very well and extremely easy.  It does have some nice tunes, though, and should be fun for little kids.

Tips and Tricks

You can throw the conk shells, pick em up and wing em at treasure chests to get what's inside.

Holding down B while you swim makes you go faster which you will probably do almost constantly.

For almost every end guy you need to turn the fish on the screen into bubbles and throw them at the boss.

Come on do you really need tips and tricks to beat this game?
