Classic Video Games Ranked

This is a list of those pre-NES games that Nintendo ported over from other video game systems.  It isn’t a list of every arcade title, just those that NES owners probably already had on another system.  Almost every one of these games is better than any previous home version.  Sadly, only Ms. Pac-Man was given extra features beyond the regular game.

Agent J’s Rankings

  1. Ms. Pac-Man – There were two different releases of this classic.  Namco gave us a bare-bones perfect rendition of classic Ms. Pac-Man.  Tengen gave us all kinds of fun modes but forces you to scroll to get to all of the pellets.  The two versions combined would be the best release ever.
  2. Dig Dug [Famicom Only] – A perfect translation of this great game, unfortunately only owners of a Famicom got to enjoy it.
  3. Donkey Kong, Jr. – The best of the Donkey Kong series and the only NES game where Mario is a villain.
  4. Popeye – A Nintendo original that got ported over to the Atari.  This version is pretty much the same and it is just as fun.
  5. Pac-Man – Although there are three different cartridges of this game on the NES, they all play exactly the same.  No frills Pac-Man.  It’s fun but not in the same league as Ms. Pac-Man on the NES.
  6. Donkey Kong – Mario’s debut is a very fun game that is missing one of its levels from the arcade.  Why Nintendo why?
  7. Galaga – A very fine translation of a game that I was never a huge fan of.
  8. Mario Bros. – A great translation of an OK game.  This one is best enjoyed in its two-player mode.
  9. Joust – The controls are quite hard to handle, but that is on purpose.  Fun game but I’m not very good at it.
  10. Q*Bert – This game is virtually unplayable without an NES Advantage due to its constant diagonal jumping.
  11. Millipede – The game is fun but why does it only take up 75% of the screen?
  12. Burgertime – Very difficult to master.  I can’t get very far so I don’t like it.
  13. Space Invaders [Famicom Only] – Much worse than the Atari 800 version.  I can see why the U.S. wasn’t treated to this bomb.
