First of all let me say that I love Bomberman. I first met the game on
the TurboGrafx-16. My cousin had it and we all loved it. Then I got it
for the SNES and the PlayStation. Then recently Agent J got Bomberman II for the NES, which is pretty cool. Basically
I'll take any Bomberman. So imagine my excitement when I come across the
one that started it all. The original Bomberman. Now imagine my
disappointment when I realize that it is only 1 player!! That's right
it's only the 1 player mode, and unfortunately that's not that great
either. In fact a C- may be a bit high for this game; I just didn't have
the heart to go any lower on Bomberman.
Not many people know this but Bomberman
is actually the prequel to Lode
Runner on the NES. In Lode Runner you are trying to
outrun bad guys who look identical to the robot that you play in Bomberman. This is explained at the end of Bomberman. Once you complete Bomberman your robot becomes human and is now Lode
Runner! Then in Lode Runner the other robots are
trying to catch you because their programmers have told them that you are
now an enemy. Sounds like a cool
Sci-Fi film to me…
Okay for anyone who hasn't played Bomberman before, you basically walk
around laying bombs. There are 50
levels, each level consisting of one room. Your goal is to kill all the bad guys
and find the exit before time expires.
When you lay bombs, they explode and destroy bricks and bad guys.
You can get power-ups such as more bombs, faster movement, longer bombs,
and many others. One cool thing about this game is as the game goes on
you get really cool power-ups. The only problem is that it makes it darn
near impossible to die. By the end I could walk through my bombs, bricks
and even withstand my own fire. However, I actually struggled on level 2
with my short bombs and short flame.
Positives:
While the graphics are pretty basic, they definitely are crisp enough
to let you know what is going on.
The gameplay is solid and it has the classic Bomberman music. There is also a password mode that
allows you to pick up where you left off.
There are also lots of power-ups available and some of them are
pretty sweet. I love being able to
control when my bombs explode and being able to walk through my own
flames.
Glaring Negatives:
Obviously the biggest problem with this game is the lack of a battle
mode or any type of two-player option.
This series definitely has humble beginnings… The graphics are also way below those
of the rest of the series and there is no story to the game until you
beat it. Bomberman is also way too easy. I didn’t die after around level 10 and
by level 30 the game was obscenely easy.
Graphics
and Sound: Decent
The graphics are a major step below Bomberman II but they aren’t terrible by any means. It can be tough to know what the
power-ups are because the icons are all very basic. The game has the same old Bomberman
music which I personally enjoy.
Gameplay
and Controls: Great
The controls are very simple and I rarely had a problem getting my guy
to go where he was supposed to.
Features:
Not Much
Just play and try to beat all the levels. However, the power-ups add
quite a bit to the game.
Fun?:
Some
The first couple of levels are fun, but it is very repetitive.
Definitely more fun when other humans are involved like in Bomberman II.
Challenge:
Weird
This is one of those rare games that gets easier as you go along. Sure
the bad guys get a little harder, but on each level you get a power-up.
So by level 50 you are one bad mother.
You will find it very hard to die after around level 25.
Replay:
Not Much
With all the other great Bomberman options available I don't see why
you would play this one.
2
Player: None
Are you as surprised as I am?
Online
Manual?: Yes

Bottom
Line: Probably Not
Just get Bomberman 2. Up to 3 people can play it. Bomberman is kind of
cool to have though since it is the first of a long series.
