Who’s up for a history lesson today. What you don’t like history?!? Well, you will certainly like this
lesson, it’s the history of
those glorious gamers Agents J and K and the long storied history of
their website.
It all started 7
years ago today 5/5/2001. Okay
first a brief flashback even farther back. A few months before Agent J had decided
he was going to collect and beat every NES game. After about 2 seconds of convincing
Agent K was on board. Both Agents
had never given up on their beloved NES.
Although they may have bought and enjoyed other systems their
hearts belonged to the NES. Well
after beating some games Agent K decided to put his immense HTML skills
to use and design a website to chronicle their achievements. Unfortunately, Agent K’s idea of immense skill was rather
minimal. He designed the website
from scratch reading books on how to create frame websites. This led to the birth of the “J and K NES Site.” It
was an annoying frame driven beast of a site but it did the job. It was found at the catchy site Url www.concentric.net/~Kscull/nes.
Our first review is
still our favorite game for the NES, Tecmo
Super Bowl. We had at least 6 updates in the first
month and reviews of Back to the Future, Bad News Baseball, and Metroid
soon followed. Unfortunately some
of the early reviews turned in by Agent K were less than stellar and
Agent J has provided an updated version of the Metroid review. However, for the nostalgic folks out
there the old version is still online. Later in the first month Agents J and K
completed their first genre ranking, Hockey. Within a few months it would become
clear that the genre rankings were the most useful aspect of the
site. As of now we have 14 different genres ranked and more are coming
soon.
A month old the J and K
NES Site celebrated its one month birthday with a massive update and the
site now had a poll. The polls are a great way to determine what Agents J
and K think about various subjects.
What are their most wanted games of the moment, what games did
they love and hate as a kid.
The site was update
regularly until the summer ended and then Agents J and K ran out of time
and there were no updates for many moons and there were many tears. However, 2002 soon came and updates
were back! Multiple updates a
month until the end of August, oh that bitter end of summer, and the
updates dried up again. In fact,
they dried up completely as the site went into hibernation. Agents J and K left their beloved site
on-line but no updates came and again many tears were shed by their loyal
fans.
Somewhere near the end
of 2004 the unthinkable happened and the J and K NES Site went offline
briefly. There were rumors that
the Agents had perished or at least lost interest in the NES. However, both rumors were untrue and
the site was reborn at the beginning of 2005 at a new location, http://home.socal.rr.com/kjnes/,
with the same content and awful
web design. There were steady
updates for a brief period and then once a slight hibernation.
2006 saw a number of
updates and the J and K NES Site kept chugging along like the tortoise it
is hoping to eventually win the race.
2006 also saw the birth of The Quest,
which is a running total of our NES collection. As of today we have nearly 450
games. Then in July of 2007
something extraordinary happened, Agents J and K emerged from the dark
ages and updated the look of their site.
It is nothing special and will probably be revamped again this
coming summer, 2008, but it was certainly a major upgrade over the
ancient beast that was originally designed in 2001.
Finally, at the
beginning of 2008 something truly amazing happened and Agents J and K
shelled out some bucks for their own domain name and NES Archives was
born! There have been constant
updates for almost a year and now we are featured monthly in Video Game Trader
magazine. Things are certainly
looking up for Agents J and K who continue to collect, beat, and review
every NES game ever made. Be
patient as there may be a few weeks or, gasp, even a month without an
update. But we will always come
back so keep surfing NES Archives and as always donations are welcome!
