Basketball Games Ranked

One word, ugghh.  While the NES isn’t exactly known for its amazing sports games, each sport has at least one excellent game on the NES and baseball has many.  However, this does not hold true for the basketball games.  Tecmo NBA Basketball is decent but there are no standouts here.  I suggest you keep walking.  However, if you must play a basketball game take a gander at our rankings.   As a side note for some reason half of the hoops games are 2 on 2 or less.  What 5 on 5 was too difficult to program?

Agent K's Rankings

  1. Tecmo NBA Basketball – Easily the best.  Full seasons with stat tracking.
  2. Jordan vs. Bird: 1 on 1 – This game has Jordan, Bird, dunk contests, and free throw contests.  It’s not a very good game but man do the rest ever stink.
  3. Double Dribble – It’s a classic, but that doesn’t make it good.
  4. Roundball – Pick your players and play some 2 on 2.
  5. Hoops – Pick your players and play 2 on 2.
  6. Harlem Globetrotters – You can kick the ball in the basket and yank down the refs pants.  What could be wrong with this game, oh yeah everything.
  7. Arch Rivals – Where’s Bill Lambier when you need him?
  8. All Pro Basketball – Double Dribble gone horribly wrong.  Every time you cross half court there is a one or two second delay.  Talk about annoying.

Unranked and Unplayed:  We actually own these and will be including them soon!

  • Ultimate Basketball
  • Magic Johnson’s Fast Break

Agent J's Rankings

  1. Tecmo NBA Basketball – Hands down the best basketball game on the system.  Unfortunately it is not near as great as Tecmo Super Bowl.
  2. Double Dribble – A quality early release from the NES that has stood the test of time.
  3. Roundball – A decent two-on-two game but it is really hard to play defense.
  4. Hoops – A mediocre two-on-two game.  Really just a poorer version of Roundball.
  5. Jordan vs. Bird: 1 on 1 – The 1 on 1 game is horrible but the contests are pretty fun.
  6. Arch Rivals – Where’s Rick Mahorn when you need him?
  7. Magic Johnson’s Fast Break – You broke my heart Magic...
  8. Ultimate Basketball – I tried to review this game but after one quarter I was down 26-0 and had never moved the ball past the half-court line.  The graphics look like a souped up Double Dribble but with some serious gameplay problems.
