Bad News Baseball

Grade: A-

This is a pretty darn fun baseball game. The gameplay is great and only Baseball Stars is superior. The theme is a little strange; it must have been marketed for kids originally. The umps are rabbits!  Although there aren't any real players or teams there are a lot of features.

Graphics and Sound: Very Solid

The graphics are pretty similar to RBI Baseball in the field and Baseball Stars at the plate.

However, during the game there are some pretty cool cut scenes, which are plentiful. You see them after home runs, close plays, and after games.

Gameplay and Controls: Pretty Good

Quite good, you rarely throw the ball to the wrong base, although it does happen at the worst times.

Features: Tons

The game is actually quite sophisticated. Players fielding, arm strength, speed, power, and average are all concerns. I think that in addition to being slower, fielding affects how often errors are committed. Also all the fielders can dive and jump, which makes for some cool shoestring grabs in the outfield. There are some cooling pitching features as well including a forkball and changeup. Also you can play as girls if you change the mode. In 1 player mode you're playing a tournament in which you have to beat all the other teams in the league. It's kind of weird because there is no real penalty for losing during the tournament. The only real feature missing is a real season mode with stat tracking.

Fun?: Very

This is one of the most fun baseball games out there. There is a tournament for one player games, but no stats are tracked. There's lots of variety and options.

Challenge: Decent

It's not too hard, but it's not too easy. I definitely lost a few times on my way to the championship. For some reason LA beat me about 4 times.

Replay: Quite A Bit

The 2 player mode is fairly endless, as you can play your buddies over and over. One player is pretty open as well. There are 10 teams and you can try to win the tourney with each one.

2 Player: Great

Play your buddies all night long with different teams.

Online Manual?: Yup

Bottom Line: Buy This Game If You Already Own Baseball Stars

Loads of fun and the 2nd best baseball game on the NES if you don't care about real players.

2nd Opinion - Agent J: B

Fun game, but it’s missing real players or a stat tracking mode to push it into the elite baseball range.

Tips and Tricks

·        It seems that if you have a power hitter and you can hit the ball pretty close to the end of the bat, you will hit a home run quite often.

·        You can always try for the extra base; the computer does not do rundowns. Just throws to the next base, so if you're gonna get caught just turn back around.

·        If you have an 8 speed on the basepaths you can steal every time against the computer, not sure about against another human.
