Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Grade: B+

This game really surprised me. Normally NES games based on movies were disappointing because they already had a built-in audience so they didn’t have to worry about how good the game was. This game was released in 1990 but its graphics are as clean as the last games made on the system in 1994. I have to confess that I have always loved Gizmo so I was immediately drawn to this game when I saw that I would be Gizmo for the entire game. Gremlins 2 is a platform game that, I believe, takes place in a hotel. You need to avoid or kill all of the evil Gremlins that have spawned due to Gizmo getting wet. This game can be very easy but also a bit frustrating plus you only get one life so be careful and write down your passwords (or just refer to the side of this page).

Positives:

Gremlins 2: The New Batch has very nice graphics, a good score and is a fun platformer.  The game is a little tough at first but each level has a specific way to beat it and that way becomes clear after you die a couple times.  It is one of the better movie translations I have played on the NES.

Glaring Negatives:

There aren’t really any glaring negatives but it would have been nice if the game had been a little longer.  It also would have been cool if some of the other good guys from the movie made appearances.

Graphics and Sound: Great

Gremlins 2 really impresses in this arena. The music in this game is of Ennio Morricone quality. After I’ve played a game a few times I tend to mute it and listen to the radio but I just can’t get myself to mute this mogwai. The graphics are nice as well. They are clean and colorful and that’s about as much as you can ask from the ole NES. Gizmo looks just like he does in the movie and the Gremlins look almost as sinister as their cinematic counterparts. There are also cool clips from the movie explaining the plot as you go along.

Gameplay and Controls: Good

For the most part the controls are great in this game. You press B to throw your weapon of choice and A jumps. The cool thing is that you can change direction of your flight mid-jump, which is very handy in the later stages. The only drawback is that sometimes Gizmo jumps where you don’t want him to go because you accidentally nudged your control pad.

Features: Passwords

After you beat each level there is a password, but when you continue you lose all of your goodies.

Fun?: Definitely

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. Since it is based on a movie I figured it would disappoint as NES remakes often did. I haven’t been able to stop playing this since I got it and I can’t the score out of my head.

Challenge: Low-Moderate

Each section of this game becomes pretty easy as you play it a few times. There is a perfect way to go through each level to reduce your damage to almost zero. Each level is challenging for a little while but once you figure it out it becomes a breeze every time after.

Replay: Some

This game is very possible to beat in about 20-30 minutes without passwords, which leads me to think that some will want to take up that challenge.

2 Player: No

Sadly this is not an option…

Online Manual?: Yes

Bottom Line: Yes

This is a fun game for everyone. Gremlins fans and moderate gamers will especially like this game as it is hard at first but becomes pretty easy. If only they would have made a Gremlins 1…

Tips and Tricks

Early on you want to kill as many enemies as possible because each one is worth 20 dollars.

· In 1-1 buy a Gizmo because they serve as extra lives and you only start with 1 life.

· In 1-2 buy a heart so that you will have 4 hearts in your life meter instead of 3.

· In 2-1 buy the P canister; it will cause your weapon to shoot in three different directions.

· After 2-1 buy gizmos whenever possible if you already have the heart and P canister.

· Take your time. There is a way to kill every enemy but if you just run in guns blazing, you’ll get hit every time. · There is always a perfect spot to stand so that the skateboarding gremlins can’t hit you but you can still whoop on them.
